Life on the Farm

High Green Farm is nestled peacefully in the Lune Valley between meadows, streams and woodland, yet conveniently positioned only 1/2 mile from the A683 midway between the small market towns of Sedbergh and Kirkby Lonsdale. We took over the farm in 1982 and in that time have experienced the highs as well as the many lows of farming life. Farming is a way of life, you either love it or you loathe it. It is a job with plenty of variety - no two days are ever the same. When the sun is shining and everything is going well you think you are as near heaven as you can get but other days when it's cold, raining cats and dogs and you find your best cow dead in the shed, those are the days when a nine to five office job looks very appealing.

As well as High Green Farm, we tenant other 'parcels' of land in the Lune Valley totalling 500 acres. In addition, we have grazing rights for our ewe flock on Middleton Common. We lamb around 1,000 ewes, a mixture of hill and lowland breeds. Some lamb indoors in the 'sheep house' and the rest out in the fields. Our flock consist of the Rough Fell which is a hardy hill breed that thrives on drier fells and the Swaledale, another hill breed which when crossed with a Blue Faced Leicester ram produces a Mule, one of the best lowland breeds.

In 2001 we made the major decision to sell our dairy herd and replace it with suckler (beef) cows. At present we have 70 cows and their calves along with other beef calves which are bought from a neighbouring farm at 8 weeks old. At any one time we have about 300 head of cattle on farm.
